The victim (E439) is a named female. The victim had studied Christianity in a known location in China and smuggled religious items into North Korea. The victim was arrested in North Korea and found to be in possession of bibles and hymns. The victim was interrogated by a known BSC unit. The victim was then transferred to Ryanggang Provincial MSS detention centre. The victim was interrogated by the MSS Vice Director of the Counterespionage Department and multiple MSS Guidance Officers of the Counterespionage Department. The victim was verbally abused and physically assaulted during interrogation. The victim was struck with a wooden club with raised spikes in the ear. The victim was forced to hang on steel bars by their arms, to sit and stand 1000 times as a form of torture, and to sit on the floor with their legs crossed from 06:00-22:00. Prior to their trial, the victim was transferred to Ryanggang Provincial MPS detention centre where the victim was interrogated by an MPS pre-trial examiner and a Section Chief of the section. The victim received a trial and was represented by a named female lawyer (E226). The lawyer representing the victim argued that the victim was a spy, stating: ‘She knows the bible and is already deeply invested in it. Releasing her would be a wrong decision’. The victim was sentenced to a re-education camp. Certain information is withheld for the victim’s safety.
