The victim (E434) is a named male. The victim was refouled and their file contained information about their attendance of a church in China that had been relayed by MSS informants. Upon arrest, the victim was detained at Hyesan City MPS detention centre and physically assaulted. The victim was tortured by named MSS officials through multiple means: the victim’s body was hung from its arms and the victim was beaten with a wooden club (called ‘airplane torture’); water with red pepper powder was poured into both nostrils; the victim’s body was hung upside down by the legs; the victim’s body was bound tightly with wooden sticks and the victim made to sit while bound for an entire day; the victim was forced to engage in bunny-hops; the victim was forced to stand up and sit down thousands of times per day; the victim was placed in solitary confinement for one week without food; and the victim was deprived of sleep. Certain information is withheld for the victim’s safety.The victim was then sent to the Kaechon re-education camp (No.1) where they served a 10 year sentence.
